    Marumi StarScape for M100 Holder

    The Marumi StarScape for M100 Holder is an exclusive light pollution cut filter designed for Marumi 100mm Magnetic Holder (M100).

    • Enables starscape photography to bring well-controlled color balance by suppressing unwanted color shifts to an orangish or yellowish picture.
    • Only 1/4 stop, equivalent to 1.2x filter factor, is realized to secure the indispensable exposure for starscape photography.
    • Easy-to-maintain coating embedded, twelve layers in total on both sides;
    • Water-/Oil repellent coating sheds water off simply also by the air blower. Nuisances such as sweat, skin crème, lotion, fingerprint, or compounded grease stains will be wiped off.
    • Anti-reflection coating sustains a low reflection.
    • Made in Japan

    StarScape for M100 effectively cuts light pollution, while the Center GND8 (0.9) adjusting down prevents artificial city lights from overexposing, resulting in a well-balanced nightscape milkyway with enhanced contrast.

    What do we use a square filter for instead of a round screw-in filter?
    When and on which occasion do we need to use Marumi square filter?

    Marumi M100 Magnetic Filter System allows you to;
    - combine a large variety of GND/ND and Polarizer/StarScape to enable an overwhelming contrast-driven expressiveness
    - shoot with no vignetting even with 16mm wide lens due to the ultra-thin frame structure overlaying ND/GND and Polarizer/StarScape.
    - adjust the position of graduation up and down, observing the composition through the optical or electronic viewfinder
    - one-second attach-/detachment by magnetic force with no time consumption compared to screw-in filters into thread
    - bracket a series of GND/ND and almost all of your lens lineup for DSLRs and Mirrorless at hand.
    - keep all-in-one set in a pouch exclusive for M100 (optional) easy carrying

    What do we use a StarScape Filter for?
    When and on which occasion do we need to use the Marumi StarScape?

    The StarScape is essential for photographers aiming to capture the true beauty of the night sky in areas affected by light pollution.
    It is particularly useful for astrophotography, nightscape photography, time-lapse shooting, and photographing phenomena like the Milky Way.
    it reduces the need for extensive post-processing to correct light pollution, saving time and effort.

    The before-/after images below show the drastic difference in impressions caused by the StarScape, which gives the night a cool bluish starry.

    Marumi offers three different filter construction for StarScape.
    - StarScape for Screw-in filter
    - StarScape for M100, Square fiter
    - StarScape for Magnetic Slim

    Optical Properties of StarScape

    The StarScape filter selectively absorbs specific wavelengths of strong light emitted by artificial urban light sources, which are the main cause of light pollution, while allowing the wavelengths from celestial bodies to pass through. This effectively cuts light pollution without compromising the colors of celestial objects.

    Sources of Light Pollution

    Light pollution refers to artificial light sources such as:

    • Mercury lamps (435.8, 546.1, 577.0, and 579.1 nm)
    • Sodium lamps (589 nm)
    • LEDs (approx. 470 nm)
    • Fluorescent lamps
    • Automobile headlights that brighten the night sky and make it difficult to see stars

    The transmission curve above shows a decrease in transmittance for specific visible light wavelengths (400-700nm), such as mercury lamps (435.8, 546.1, 577.0, and 579.1 nm), sodium lamps (589 nm), and LEDs (approx. 470 nm). This indicates that these artificial light sources emit harmful orange and yellow light, which can interfere with astronomical observations and contribute to light pollution, making it difficult to see cold color stars in the night sky.

    What is "Light Pollution"?

    Light pollution refers to artificial light sources such as;
    -
    mercury lamps,
    - sodium lamps,
    - LEDs,
    - fluorescent lamps,
    - or Automobile headlights that brighten the night sky and make it difficult to see stars.

    In modern inhabited areas, it is hard to see the Milky Way in urban cities, and when you take a picture, the night skyscape sometimes turns obviously yellowish. This color shift phenomenon is caused by, so to say, "Light Pollution".
    This color shift makes the starscape-/nightscape photograph enthusiasts very annoyed.

    How Marumi StarScape eliminates Light pollution?
    Which White Balance should I select?

    By kneading a component that absorbs unwanted light into the glass, the color shift phenomenon will be suppressed, turning the overall image natural bluish.

    In addition, no matter which white balance is selected, there is no extreme color shift. The following Before-/After (left without StarScape/right with StarScape) pictures present how they look depending on each White Balance setting. Based on the weather conditions of the day and also on your creativity, choose the appropriate White Balance.

    The brightness, which is a significant element for starscape photography, can be sufficiently secured at an exposure multiplier 1.2 (about 1/4 stop).
    The StarScape filter is also available in the Screw-in, and in the Magnetic Slim Series.
