NUMBER OF COATING LAYERS

on October 07, 2022

Occasionally we receive some inquiries from our users regarding "The number of coating layers" embedded on the glass of our filters. Hopefully, you will understand our point of view on measures of the coating layers by reading this article.

The following officially summarize our company's point of view shortly.

"THE MINIMUM NUMBER OF COATING LAYERS/COMBINATIONS PERFORMING THE MAXIMUM COATING EFFECT IS THE BEST SOLUTION WE CAN PRESENT TO OUR CUSTOMERS."

In reality, it depends on filter (or lens) manufacturers if they disclose the number of coating layers or not.

Some manufacturers do not disclose it due to their own interpretation of their coating technology.

Some others seem to compete for the number of coating layers by emphasizing
"The greater the number of coating layers, the better the quality of the filter (or lens)" based on their unique marketing doctrine.

Marumi discloses it in our major product line-up, speaking of the number of coating layers.

For instance, the marumi EXUS series provides the most advanced coating technology.
Twenty-two layers in total on both sides, which consists of;
- Anti-Static/Anti-reflection Coatings
- Water-/Oil-/Finterprint repellent Coatings. (EXUS UV and Lens Protect)
It also embraces a scratch resistant function. (EXUS UV and Lens Protect)

Those number of coating layers are the best-optimized result of our trial-and-error experiences. In other words, we concluded that the twenty-two was the minimum number of layers/combinations which functions and proves the maximum coating performance.

In conclusion of our policy, we should not emphasize the number of coating layers to our customers. The filter with many coating layers put itself at the risk of exposure, destroying the coatings such as scratch or by cleaning procedures.

Please keep it in mind when you purchase your filter what the number of coating layers could mean.

Thank you for your attention!
